Teacher Training

You can train to teach in your local school with the Swindon & Wiltshire Teaching School Hub.

Working with our Outstanding teacher training provider, United Teaching, we provide a year-long uniquely supportive route into teaching to help you become the best teacher you can be.

Here are the highlights:

ONE

On-the-job experience

you’ll be based in a school from day one, teaching on a reduced timetable with support from colleagues and mentors

TWO

Professional qualifications

every trainee works to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and most choose to study for their PGCE at the same time

THREE

Expert-led training

you’ll attend weekly sessions delivered by experienced educators who know what works in the classroom

FOUR

Comprehensive network of support

you’ll have professional mentors, subject mentors, department heads, programme leads and colleagues all working to give you advice and help you improve your teaching practice. There’s always someone to turn to!

What qualifications do I need?

To train to teach with us, you will need:

  • A degree grade of 2:2 or above
  • English and Maths GCSE grades of C or above
  • Science GCSE grades of C or above (if you want to teach primary)
  • A-level grades of at least BCC (or equivalent qualifications)

We'll also be looking for evidence of a positive child-centred ethos and/or some experience of working with young people. If you’re thinking about training to teach but would like to get more experience in schools first, take a look at our Future Teachers programme.

What does it cost?

We offer two routes into teaching – salaried and self-funded.

On the salaried route, you’ll be paid an unqualified teacher’s salary (currently £20,598 - £32,134) for the year. Salaried places can be very competitive, so we recommend applying as early as possible if you are thinking about taking this route.

On the self-funded route, you’ll pay your tuition fees (£9,000), but you’ll be entitled to apply for a student loan to cover fees and maintenance. There are also bursaries and scholarships of up to £29,000 available for certain subjects – you can find the most up-to-date information on the Get Into Teaching website.
